Calder Article Found - Alexander Calder Photos by Phillip Harrington 1958 Look Magazine

I was contacted by Bob Smoak, a very interesting man, who did a paper on Calder's work as a senior in High School.  He was so captivated by Calder's work that he went on to create some very interesting mobile pieces of his own.

I was lucky enough to meet Bob and his wife Martha while on their travels to see some southern history (the Windsor Ruins in Port Gibson MS) and their grandchildren in Oklahoma.  Bob happend to be looking online for cedar whatnots and found a cedar mobile that was for sale in my Etsy Store (http://www.etsy.com/shop/skysettermobiles).  They spent a morning with me at the Natchez Art Assocation studio where we discussed the finer points of kinetic mobile design and design in general.

What fun it was to go over Bob's original designs for kinetic mobiles, some that he had never built but only dreamt of building and a very unique jewelry design.  But the gem in his cash of 1958 memorabilia was an article on Calder written by Richard Schickel and photographed by Phillip Harrington.  The magazine or newspaper is Look Magazine and the date would have been unidentified if it wasn't for the article mentioning Calder's age, 60 years old at the time of the article.  It also included an advertisement for the 1959 Rambler (last photo shown) which places the article in the latter part of 1958.  Unfortunately, someone decided to enhance one of the photos in the article but we will ignore the enhancement as it seems Sandy was trying to be funny at the time anyway.  I hope you enjoy the article as much as I have.

  1. Hi, I saw you post - my dad was Phillip Harrington, the photographer on this piece on Calder. The article appeared in LOOK Magazine, which closed down in 1971. I actually have the original 35mm color slides of these photos of Calder. (I don;t think he had red lipstick on, as shown in the last image). Hope that helps
